Inaugural Curatorial Project by Art Weaves, Australia

Curated by Art Weaves, Australia, Gallery Manora, a newly conceptualized, fine arts destination in Bangalore is all set to host its second major exhibition, REVISITED by Bengaluru Doctor turned Artist Dr.Seemanthini Desai and Australian Ceramic Sculptor Feyona van Stom, in Bangalore, 4th March to 9th April 2017. Located in the heart of city - Indiranagar, the solo exhibition is conducted by Sydney based Art Weaves, an organization that promotes Australian Ceramic Art around the globe.

REVISITED by Desai and van Stom is a cross-cultural conversation, a contemporary take on the Ajanta’s sculptural forms and frescoes; their vibrant polychromy and the Divine. It’s also an entwined dialogue between two artists, one painting a sculpture and the other sculpting a painting. Together they have used their personal perspectives revealing an intriguing dimensional cross over.

Dating back to the Second Century BC, the Ajanta Caves in Western India, resplendent with some of India’s oldest known Buddhist art in a labyrinth of hollowed out rock extant, have inexorably drawn artists and historians back to reflect on them again and again over many centuries.

Seemanthini Desai’s compositions bring to life the monolithic forms and the architectural elements of Ajanta as oils on canvas. The play of light and shadow, the glow of warm sunsets on sculpted rock and stone informs her work. Feyona van Stom’s installation of hand-built ceramic feminine forms expresses her joy of the lively, theatrical expressionism found in Ajanta’s depictions of contemporary palace life.

The art installation comprises of six large format Oils on Canvas almost paying homage to the monolithic Ajanta forms and 29 ceramic sculptural pieces. As part of the exhibition, the two artists will take us through their artistic journeys, inspirations and work leading up to this exhibition. Feyona van Stom will also conduct a demonstration of ceramic sculptural techniques on 4th March, 11 am start.

The exhibition is open to the public from 4th March 2017 to 9th April 2017 at Gallery Manora, 55, Corner of 9th A Main 100 ft Road, Indiranagar, Bangalore opposite the public park.

About Dr Seemanthini Desai:

A classical dancer since the age of seven and growing up in a house full of artists, it was a natural progression for her to delve into the world of painting. Her first exhibition was held when she was a 13 year old. Her formative years were spent on developing techniques in portraiture, painting oil on canvas whilst studying for a medical degree. The play of light and shadow, and textures of sculptural forms, informs her work. She is forever challenging herself being drawn to ancient Indian sculptures and three dimensional architectural forms, bringing them to life onto canvas.

As a practicing doctor and CEO of a diagnostic laboratory since 2012, classical music and dance lessons running back to back through the week, painting everyday brings her peace and perspective. Many of her works are today part of private collections.
