ARTIST STATEMENT
“My sculptures are mostly hand built, individual pieces of work. My work begins with an idea translated into a drawing although it is the clay that determines the final form and how every piece of work will look in the end. As I work the clay I start seeing a form. I use clay with grog in it - sometimes letting the finish be rough or burnish it for the smoothness. Once the sculpture is completed, I leave it to dry, sometimes with underglazes, sometimes without.
The raku firing that was discovered years ago in Asia It works beautifully on my female forms.
I love the heat, the smoke, the teamwork and the random finish that occurs in both the glazed and the unglazed raku pieces. The wood firing has a particular aesthetic. The darker glazes and the smoke and heat from firing has unpredictable effects on the sculptures. I rarely clean the work. When I do, I clean it with hot water, soap and a scrubbing brush. I contemplate on the pieces for a few before deciding on the final pieces. I then document it from several angles, trying to catch the movement that I started with. I enjoy every stage of the creation, the idea, the making, the firing, the finish, and am only waiting for someone else to enjoy it too".
